Today, the Montreal rock trio Cola returned with "Skywriter's Sigh," a wistful new track coming off their upcoming record, Cost Of Living Adjustment (C.O.L.A.), out May 8 via Fire Talk Records. The band also announced they'd be expanding their promotional world tour, adding Australia dates to their roster.
"Skywriter's Sigh" comes with a brightly animated visualizer designed and directed by Maxwell Farrell. Watch/listen to the single below:
In their wistful new track — a melodic, run-of-the-mouth vocal performance by singer-songwriter Tim Darcy that, when coupled with the jangly guitars, gives off the nostalgic sheen of a Smiths song — Cola wrestle with feelings of impermanence under this economic structure. On previous singles "Hedgesitting" and "Conflagration Mindset," Cola leaned into nostalgia as a coping mechanism, often writing lyrics that mourn an easier past to avoid facing a harsh present. Now, however, their final track off the record warns against that attitude: "Don’t romanticize a better time," Darcy sighs. An apathetic system doesn't care about one's history, one's possessions, one's life, he suggests; "They'll put your cot outside in the rain..."
Cola will be going on tour this June, stopping by venues in Australia before heading to The US, Canada, The UK, and Europe all summer long. Tickets are available now.
