Weird Al goes Broadway: 'Dare to Be Stupid' brings parody royalty to the stage

If there was ever an artist that was "Broadway ready," it would have to be Weird Al Yankovic. If anything, it is somewhat surprising that it took this long for Dare to Be Stupid: The Weird Al Musical to become a reality.

The new musical, currently being developed for Broadway, brings together a creative team that knows its way around high-wire comedy and theatrical parody. Alex Timbers (of Moulin Rouge! stage adaptation fame) is set to direct, with writers Scott Brown and Anthony King (the duo behind works like Gutenberg! The Musical! and Beetlejuice) handling the book. Production is being led by Tony Award-winning Seaview, known for championing boundary-pushing theatrical work.

As expected, the score pulls from Yankovic’s deep, decades-spanning catalog of musical parody. The show will feature some of his most recognizable reinterpretations, including “White & Nerdy,” “Amish Paradise,” “Eat It,” “Smells Like Nirvana,” and “Like a Surgeon.” Its a tracklist that, in typical Weird Al fashion, serves as a cultural mirror held at a slightly warped angle.

Yankovic, never one to undersell a punchline, framed the project with his usual deadpan sincerity. “Ever since I was a middle-aged man, I’ve always wanted to be a part of the New York theatre community,” he said in a statement. “Plus, the one thing people always say about Broadway is that it’s ‘severely lacking in Weird Al-based entertainment,’ and I think this musical should fix that problem immediately.”

Timbers, meanwhile, approaches the project with the enthusiasm of someone finally getting to collaborate with a long-time influence in full theatrical technicolor. “I first fell in love with Al’s music with the release of Dare To Be Stupid and have remained an avid fan ever since,” said Timbers. “Now, it’s a dream come true to work with one of my comedy heroes bringing an original story set to his beloved songbook to the stage. What Al, Anthony, and Scott are creating is unexpected, subversive, meta, and hilarious and I can’t wait for the world to experience it.”

Producer Greg Nobile, CEO of Seaview, positioned the show as something more than just a novelty adaptation. “Dare To Be Stupid feels like the kind of musical that only comes around once in a while, wildly original, deeply funny, and powered by the unmistakable heart that has made ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic a singular voice in American culture,” he said. “Beneath the absurdity and the joy, is a show about creativity, individuality, and the freedom to be unapologetically yourself. We couldn’t be more thrilled to be working with Al, Alex, Scott and Anthony to bring Weird Al’s singular world to the stage.”

For now, Dare to Be Stupid remains in development, with additional details, including timeline and further creative team announcements, expected soon.
