So long as there are colors on the visible spectrum, Weezer will spiritually name a new self-titled record after one. Today, the alt rock band have announced their latest self-titled record — their 20th overall — and on the cover, their band logo, several symbols ("believed to represent its creators," according to the band), and the infinity sign are embossed in a glossy gold.
Weezer ("The Gold Album") will be out August 21 via Reprise/Warner Records. To celebrate the album announcement, the band has shared the promotional single "We Might As Well Be Strangers," feat. vocals from Wednesday's Karly Hartzman. Weezer also shared dates for an upcoming promotional tour.
"We Might As Well Be Strangers" comes with an official music video directed by Jasper Graham and starring Karly Hartzman. Watch/listen to the new single below:
Weezer developed The Gold Album after meeting in Orange County, CA briefly after the 30th anniversary tour for their debut self-titled record ("The Blue Album"). Per the band via press release, they wanted to approach it like their 1994 breakout, writing as four guys in a room. What came of it was a collection of new songs co-written by three of the four members, with front man/guitarist Rivers Cuomo and drummer Pat Wilson writing the basics of a song together for the first time since The Blue Album.
The new Weezer record features production from Swedish pop producer Klas Åhlund (Madonna, The Weeknd, Iggy Pop, etc.) and Kenneth Blume (FKA "Kenny Beats"), who wanted to make "the most violent Weezer album ever," per the press release. The band have opted for minimal production; parts were recorded live and involve no pitch correction, click tracks, or grid.
Conceptually, Weezer (2026) is a "greatest hits" album of entirely new songs, reflecting on aging, their legacy, their role in inspiring the next generation of rock bands, and how they're feeling as a working band decades later.
Weezer's promotional tour will officially begin in September, following an appearance at the Halifax Music Fest. The band will be traveling to arenas across North America. Tickets are available now.
