Metal For Nepal has launched an emergency fundraiser to provide immediate relief to those affected by the deadly flash flood that has claimed hundreds of lives.
The flood tore through Nepal's Rusuwa and Nuwakot districts on August 26, killing at least 469 people at the time of writing this article, displacing families and damaging critical infrastructure. Experts believe the disaster may have been triggered by a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) originating in Tibet.
The full scope of the disaster is still being realized. Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) reports that thousands remain missing and unreachable, including 517 foreign nationals, 44 Nepal Army personnel and 28 members of the Nepal Police. Search-and-rescue efforts are still underway.
Metal For Nepal is working with local NGO partners to get aid to affected communities as quickly as possible. Donations will go toward necessities such as emergency supplies and clean drinking water, as well as longer-term recovery and rebuilding efforts.
Children will be a particular focus of the campaign, as they face heightened risks in the immediate aftermath of the disaster, though aid will be provided to affected people of all ages.
Metal For Nepal is not a stranger to disaster aid in the region. Following the devastating 2015 earthquake in Nepal, the organization mobilized support from the international metal and tattoo communities to help with relief efforts. Director Flower KC is now asking that the same community show up again.
“We need to come together exactly like we did after the 2015 earthquake,” KC says. “The heavy metal and tattoo community has always shown up for people in need, and this moment is no different. Every donation goes straight toward getting families and children the support they need right now.”
