MARINA announces new record 'Princess of Power'

Since February, alt pop artist MARINA has been releasing new singles, hinting at an upcoming record. Today she confirmed the rumors were true: her sixth studio album, Princess of Power, will be released on June 6. CJ Baran (Melanie Martinez, Nessa Barrett, Carly Rae Jepsen) is credited as the record's producer.

This is MARINA's first album as an independent artist. The pop star was previously under contract with Atlantic Records, with whom she worked with for fourteen years, releasing five LPs.

MARINA also released her third promotional single "CUNTISSIMO" ahead of the album announcement and her Coachella performance tomorrow, April 11. The single comes with an accompanying music video, which will premiere tomorrow as well. Listen to the new track below:

"CUNTISSIMO" joins previous promotional singles "BUTTERFLY" and "CUPID'S GIRL" as an upbeat dance pop anthem about empowerment.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, MARINA explained that Princess of Power will be an album ultimately about loving her inner self. "Internally, I’ve always struggled to feel like I’m allowed to be my own person,” she said. “The album is about teaching yourself — or re-teaching yourself — how to love.” Among finding powerful female icons to channel, other themes in this record reflect on aging in the pop industry, finding one's voice, and challenging patriarchal oppression.

The visuals for the record are filled to the brim with satin ribbons, rococco wigs, and pastels — a coquettish flair that feels familiar to MARINA's brand during the Family Jewels (2010) and Electra Heart (2013) days of her career.

She told Rolling Stone that Princess of Power will be a pop record, though she had no intention of writing one. Working with Baran helped determine the sound of Princess of Power: "I think that’s why the energy of this record feels different: It’s part of my evolution as a human being," she said. "It’s a really fun record. It has a lot of energy.”
