Last night, Geordie Greep stopped by Nashville's Blue Room at Third Man Records as part of his lengthy world tour promoting his debut album, The New Sound. Yet the 25 year-old British indie rocker is always full of surprises: in the middle of the performance, Greep invited Sean Stephens (@seanstephens.music on TikTok) to sing the 2023 viral meme song "Rectangular" together. Stephens's "Rectangular" became viral on TikTok in July 2023 when he posted a video of him singing it in New York City's Times Square. (He also posted the same video to Instagram reels the same day.) Sporting neon green hair and a matching gingham tie, the Canadian singer claimed he "traveled a thousand kilometers to New York City" to sing his short song about feeling spiritually connected to a rectangle.

The lyrics "I am rectangular, I feel no hole" received extra attention from the thousands of people liking, sharing, and reposting the original TikTok, as the double-entendre of "hole" sparked its own branch of memes and jokes.

And perhaps no one is more worthy of donning the stage with icon Sean Stephens than fellow weirdo and meme-lover Geordie Greep. In late 2024, the singer-songwriter admitted on NTS Radio that the memes he sees on Instagram Reels inspire his work. “I just like the songs people make up," he said. "People make up the weirdest songs, and they go big.” He then notably cites "Rectangular" as one of his recent favorites.

This isn't even the first time Greep performed "Rectangular" at one of his concerts for The New Sound tour. Shortly after his original comment on RTS Radio, he and his band debuted their instrumental arrangement of the song, incorporating it into one of their jam sections at their Liverpool show.
