The alt rockers Fontaines D.C. have been relatively quiet since the 2024 release of their fourth record, Romance. But, after headlining a show at Baluarte de la Candelaria in Cádiz, Spain on August 8 — their first gig in 2026 — the Irish band have officially begun teasing their new project. Today, they confirmed via social media that a fifth album was coming, and they shared a snippet of a forthcoming single, "Marianne."
Watch the snippet for "Marianne." below:
Fontaines first let fans know of the new single, an evolution of the tense yet dreamy industrial-influenced rock sound of Romance, during their August 8 performance in Cadíz. They played "Marianne" fourth in their setlist, and "Six Shot Morning" came during the encore, according to NME. Per live footage of the new material (provided below) the band seem to be taking their sound in a darker, synth-ier direction.
It's tough to say Fontaines were on proper hiatus since Romance, especially because members took the time off to focus on other side projects. Guitarist Carlos O'Connell released a new, self-titled record under Dead Dads Club, a joint collaboration with Parma Violets front man Chilli Jesson, in January. Front man Grian Chatten worked on the Peaky Blinders (Motion Picture Soundtrack), contributing three singles for the feature film, and he co-wrote "Flags" with Damon Albarn and Kae Tempest for the HELP(2) charity compilation record for War Child UK. Fontaines also contributed to the album's setlist with a cover of "Black Boys on Mopeds."
No album title, art, tracklist, or release date have been confirmed as of yet, and Fontaines D.C. have not revealed when they would be releasing "Marianne." But, when it does come out, it'll be the first piece of original music from the band since "It's Amazing To Be Young" and "Before You I Just Forget," bonus tracks off 2025's Romance (Deluxe Edition).
Fontaines D.C. are currently on a festival circuit in Europe, with a headline spot at both Reading and Leeds at the end of August. Later this year, they'll be attending Electric Picnic, Sea.Hear.Now, Shaky Knees, and Ohana Festival.
