Philadelphia’s enigmatic noise outfit Crowhurst have spent the better part of 15 years giving genre boundaries little thought outside how to surpass them.

Now, after seven years of relative silence, the band returns with "the stars ain't gonna save us," the first single taken from T H O R N S, due out November 6 via Sleeping Giant Glossolalia.

T H O R N S finds Crowhurst pushing well beyond the noise and metal that defined much of their sprawling catalog, reorganizing as an ensemble of classical and experimental musicians for what the group describes as its most cinematic undertaking yet.

Of the new track, Crowhurst mastermind Jay Gambit says:

“The music is very much influenced by krautrock, like Agitation Free, and things like Bohren & der Club of Gore, Mount Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble, but also things like 'Perdition City'-era Ulver and Thee Silver Mt. Zion Orchestra — those kinds of influences coming together to make this trippy, krautrock-y, post-black metal, post-everything noisy kind of situation.”

T H O R N S expands Crowhurst into a larger conceptual world inspired by the work of artist Gage Lindsten (Magic: The Gathering) whose artwork appears throughout the project. The concept will eventually extend to a digital city that listeners will be able to explore alongside the album.

For this go around, the lineup features Gambit handling samples, sound manipulation and electronics, alongside saxophonist Dima Dudko (White Ward), harpist and flutist Claire Deak, drummer and violinist Christian Molenaar, guitarist Dave Suzuki (Churchburn, ex-Vital Remains), synth player Justin Sweatt, cellist and violinist Isaac Takeuchi, pianist Mark Warm II and producer Jeff Zeigler on vibraphone. Sleepwalker’s PBV, meanwhile, lends his talents on seven instruments.

Produced by Alex Sedin and Crowhurst, T H O R N S features five tracks reflecting the project's uncompromising and ever-evolving nature and its return to independent roots. The album's official cover art was designed by Lindsten.
