Björk's witchy on-screen debut 'The Juniper Tree' gets re-scored by composer Midori Hirano

Berlin-based Japanese composer Midori Hirano has announced the October 2 release of a reimagined score to Björk's on-screen debut The Juniper Tree, written and directed by American filmmaker Nietzchka Keene in 1986 – the same year that Björk formed her international breakthrough band The Sugarcubes.

Inspired by her own travels in Iceland, Hirano's new score was commissioned last year by Belgian arts center Viernulvier as part of their Videodroom series that pairs contemporary composers with classic arthouse cinema. Other releases in the series include claire rousay's The Bloody Lady and Félicia Atkinson's Sans Visage.

The Juniper Tree will be a co-release by Viernulvier and Thrill Jockey. Listen to two tracks below:

Set in Iceland and shot in black and white, The Juniper Tree is a feminist retelling of a fairytale of the same name by the Brothers Grimm, centered on the lives of two young sisters Margit (Björk) and Katla who share an inherited witchcraft with their mother who was murdered for it.

Writing in a press release Hirano describes "Take Me With You" as "a piece played in the scene where Margit is searching for her mother on the shore. A simple ambient synth tone repeats at regular intervals, slowly changing in timbre, reflecting Margit's quiet calls for her mother," and "Spell On You" as "a simple piano piece, evoking a sense of both eeriness and sacredness. This appears multiple times throughout the film whenever Margit's sister Katla casts a spell."

The Juniper Tree is out October 2. Pre-order here. Tracklist below:
