Marina Herlop goes it alone for her fifth album 'Dja Dja'

Catalan artist and composer Marina Herlop has today shared news of her fifth album Dja Dja, out October 9 via her own label Lapsus Records. It's a high concept and ambitious piece, pieced together slowly over 3 years and designed to be listened to as a whole architecture, but if you really can't wait lead track "Jaque" is out now for early enjoyment.

The Bandcamp notes for the record describe it as "a violent celebration of life, though not the hedonist's easy yes," and alludes to Herlop's own "hero's journey" through an unnamed ordeal. There's less voice and bass this time around, with an intuitive approach to scoring for orchestral brass in its place.

Almost everything was made at Herlop's home in Barcelona, though recording of the gamelan took place in Bali with local musicians. By design, the album has no real visual element besides the striking, bright red cover art based on a painting by American artist Brittney Leeanne Williams. "In an age of visual surplus she would rather hand the picture back to the listener," go the release notes. "The only story she asks anyone to follow is the one the music tells itself."
