There are a selective amount of rappers who define a particular scene in hip-hop. Los Angeles rapper, Schoolboy Q is one of those rappers. His storytelling abilities mixed with his ambient production helped Q become one of the defining voices of 2010's west coast hip hop.
His 2016 album, Blank Face LP is regarded as one of his best albums and made Q into a leading voice in hip-hop. 10 years later, Q decided to go on tour to celebrate the album, for everyone to relive 2016.
I got a chance to join the sold out experience this past Saturday at Brooklyn Paramount in Brooklyn, NY.
Opening up for Q was West Coast rapper TF, a name that for some reason was not featured on the main billing. Regardless, he was solid. Nothing extraordinary, but he did nail it when he performed "The Scorpion Sting."
As the crowd began swell following TF's performance, the overhead playlist played hip-hop hits such as "tv off" by Kendrick Lamar and "Solo" by Future. It reminded me of my college playlist.
Then, Q stepped in, he started playing "TorcH," and the crowd lit up. This was fitting given how it's the first song off of Blank Face LP. When talking about the album, Q mentioned how "It should've won 3 fucking Grammys." My favorite song off the record and the most popular track, "THat Part," was played, and let me tell you: the mosh pit went hard. (It was weird hearing the Ye feature in the song though, admittedly.)

Hearing "Kno Ya Wrong" was a blast to the past, especially when the Lance Skiiiwalker feature came on. I wish he came on stage to perform his verse, but one can dream.
Despite it being the 10 Years of Blank Face LP Tour, Q performed tracks from his other albums as well. "Yeern 101" off of Blue Lips was a nice addition, along with hearing "Numb Numb Juice" from CrasH Talk. Q also mentioned that a new album is one the way, though he didn't elaborate any further. If it's anything like Blank Face LP, I'm hyped.
My favorite part of the whole experience came when Q played "Collard Greens." This spacey melodic track from Oxymoron is a certified banger and got everyone was dancing. Q even seemed excited to rap it. The crowd was also very respectful during the song; the mosh pit wasn't too rowdy and people gave each other space to be themselves.

To close the show, Q brought out TF to perform "Tookie Knows II." It was a nice touch given how it's the last song on the album.
My biggest critique of the whole show would just be that it felt too short. I was left just wanting more (there was no encore). Q didn't even play the entirety of Blank Face LP. I wish he would've played the album front to back. Not hearing "Str8 Ballin" felt jarring – it would've been a certified banger for the show. It also felt weird that he skipped "Man of the Year," his biggest hit and one of my personal favorite tracks.
Despite this, this was a solid show and I would recommend seeing Q at least once.
