Porter Robinson, Olivia Rodrigo, Big Sean, Pearl Jam | Weekly Track Roundup: 3/24/24

Hey, hi, and hello, everyone. Anthony Fantano here, internet's busiest music nerd, and it's time for a weekly track, Roundup. Yep, all my feelings on a bunch of songs that have dropped this past week. Whether I loved them or hated them or felt somewhere in between, they're all linked down below, so you can check them out for yourself. Also linked down below, per usual, is our turntable lab link. Yeah, if you want to use that to buy some vinyl, buy some turntable stuff, some Bluetooth speakers, whatever it is we get kicked back from it. Helps out the channel. Big support. Thank you. Thank you. It would be great if you guys did that. Also, our Patreon page is down there, too. Get some extra bonus monthly content while supporting us in the process. Thank you. Youtube Shorts page. All that good short form content getting uploaded there regularly. And let's move on to the worst tracks of the week. We're finally there. Without any further ado, they are as follows, starting with Ba-Bam. New one from Wallows. They have been dropping a few singles for the release of their forthcoming album, this latest one, Calling After Me.

Just sounds like a lesser version of The Strokes. Not really seeing the appeal, not seeing the excitement, not seeing the point. I just feel like I already have this, but better on numerous other albums. All right, moving on from there, we also have a new one from Lil Texas. I love the boy. I love the guy. One of the greatest hard style producers out there right now. But this distorted and ultra-aggressive remix of peanut butter jelly time is just not it. It's fun while it's on, but I'm not sure if I'm ever going to listen to this again. It might kill live, though. Might kill live. We also have a new one over here from The Story So Far, who are back in the mix with a few new tracks, and they could not sound more generic and disappointing. Big Blind is the name of this new cut. I'm just not really into it. As far as emo pop punk, emo pop goes, it is very underwhelming and very stale at this point. They could have brought something else to the table, but they didn't really. And finally, not really all too crazy about this Too Sweet track from the boy, Hoesier.

I think it's beneath him writing-wise, and the whole premise of the track is a little silly. I'll say it's a little silly, at least in terms of the lyrics he's putting into it. Very basic. Meanwhile, the rhythm section feels like something Foster the People or Black Keyes would do. But of course, he's not getting reamed for in the way that they would. But it is what it is. It's just an overwhelming track. There are better songs on the new ERP that he just put out, though, so don't make this one keep you from trying it out. All right. The songs I was meh on, On The Fence. Not crazy about, but you might like them more than me. They are as follows. We have a new one from Vegan. A lot of singles from this producer's forthcoming album, some of which have been highs, some of which have been okay. This one, in my opinion, is okay. It's got some very speedy beats on it, some dreamy synthesizers, a vocal contribution from Ethan P. Flynn that is just okay. Another Nine Days is the name of the track. Again, not nuts about it, but I suppose it is a bit of a subtle vibe.

Moving on from there, we have a new one from FK Twigs with 2 Shell, Talk to Me is the name of the cut. It's a very synthy, futuristic dance pop with maybe just too much autotune thrown onto the vocals. I feel like it obscures Twigs' vocals to the point where I'm not getting out of them what I typically do when she is giving a killer vocal performance. I just think it's okay. We have a new one from Pearl Jam who are trying to rock as hard as they possibly can to the point where they sound maybe a wee bit like Nervana on this new track running. It's okay. It's passable. Also passable is this new one from Paul Bear. Lengthy, multi-phased, dooms style metal track with some great guitar passages. I could take or leave the vocals, though. First taste of this forthcoming album, Mind Burns Alive. The name of the track is Where the Light Fades. Moving on from there. Maggie Rogers has dropped another single for her forthcoming album. So sick of Dreaming is the title of it. And yeah, I'm liking the blend of pop rock and americana that she's been doing on this new stuff.

I just feel like the bridge on this track with the spoken word bit involving the nicks really derails things in a preposterous way. Still looking forward to the record, though. I think it's shaping up to maybe be her best release yet. We also have a new recently released extra track from the late Mac Miller. The Quest is the name of the cut. It's from the forthcoming release of the 10th anniversary of watching movies with the sound off. And this track over here is more on the introspective side. Not his best writing, as I think There are some filler bars in there, here and there, but it is very clearly a moody cut for Mac with an interesting production choice as well. It would have been interesting to hear this drop at the time that this record came out because this production was not exactly trendy at the time. It would have definitely been quite different for him to release a track with this instrumental style on the back of it. We also have a new one from Justice, latest single. This one features Miguel. Satur9 is the name of it. There's something about the groove on this one I'm not quite feeling.

Miguel's vocal contributions are very Prince-esque, which I don't entirely mind. I just feel like the groove is a little misshapen, a little off. It's not going quite as hard as some of the other Justice tracks so far. We have a new one from Charlie XCX. It is a remix of her latest single, Von Dutch. But now with this version, we have AG Cook and Addison Ray, too, in the mix. I guess it's obviously a cool crossover. Given Addison Ray's Love of Charlie, given AG Cook's previous work with Charlie. But I don't know, given the results of how it came out, I wouldn't say it's entirely necessary, nor did it really best the original in any way. Let's move on to the best tracks of the week. We have quite a few of those. Remember everything linked, a link down below, so you could check it out for yourself. Starting off with this new one from Zela, Firescape is the name of the track. I'm just getting acquainted with this artist, and this particular track that she's dropped over here is very moody A futuristic piece of art pop with some very heady and surreal production, liking it quite a bit.

Looking forward to what she's going to be doing this year for sure, for sure. We have a new one from Shebaka, band leader, composer, horn player who has a new solo album on the way. This new one over here with Floating Points also has Andre 3000 in the mix, too, from what I understand. It is a very minimal, repetitive, jazzy improvisation, experimental piece. I'll Do Whatever You Want is the title of it. Loving this one quite a bit. We have a new one from this metal group that I am also becoming acquainted with that goes by the name of Scarcity in the Basin of Alchaline Grief is the name of the track. The drums are ferocious. The vocals have a riddle, harsh, almost black metal type style, while the guitars literally sound like a dozen different alarms going off. Sirens, car alarms, I don't know, alarm clocks. It's nuts, what they're doing with the guitar parts on this. And yet it still sounds like a metal track. It's absolutely insane. I'm hoping the guitar work is just as creative on the rest of the project when it eventually comes out. Loving the new track from Remi Wolf.

Big ideas, new record on the way. Cinderella is the name of the track. Super great vocal harmonies and killer chorus on this one, too. Remi is really in her pop bag on this one, for sure, for sure. Also in Their pop bag is Porter Robinson, new track cheerleader, and he's bringing elements of J-pop and emo-pop, and I would say blog house, Electronica from the 2000s for a track that's all about somebody that's so obsessed with him that they would rather see him burned alive than not be with him. It's crazy, very unhinged as far as the writing. But meanwhile, the production of melodies are super sweet, super cute, punchy, rocking, and fun. Liking this direction, liking this single quite a bit. Also liking the track Obsessed off the new Olivia Rodrigo Deluxe Edition of Guts. I don't know how, but like all these extra tracks are freaking fire. Highly recommend this one along with all of the Others, too. Really liking this new one from Mount Kimby that features King Cruel, most likely going to be the only song on it that sounds quite like this, but they have a history of doing some good collaborations with Cruel, and this is another one of them.

It's a very lengthy the dreamy indie pop rock cut with, obviously, those despondent washed-out lead vocals from Archie, and it's very meditative, very entrancing, loving it quite a bit. We also have a new one from this rapper who I stumbled across in my inbox, Joe Jass, Joe Jass, WTF. It's got this very wild, it's the eccentric, like early 2000s, almost like odd future-esque vibe to it, but not so edgy that it makes you wince, liking it quite a bit. Solid single all around. And Dev Lemons has a good new one out that has a breathy, beautiful little start to it. It's quite enchanting. And then it goes into this blown-out, distorted, almost, I would say, Slabell's-esque final leg that kicks total ass. Freak Show is the name of the song. And again, I think Dev continues to grow artistically and sonically on these new cuts. And one last one, Big Sean, Precision. Really liking his new single over here. It's not one of his deepest or headiest cuts, as he did have some personal and introspective moments on Detroit, too. I have no doubt that there are more to come on his next album, but to kick things off for this latest album, Cycle.

He's hitting us with a very in your face, wrap and rap and type single with a good solid beat, a lot of relentless flows, and some witty one-liners here and there, and some cute little adlibs that I think go over quite well. But yeah, Big Sean's doing Big Sean things on this latest single for sure. All right, well, Weekly Track roundup in the can. Hopefully, you guys got some good recommendations out of this video. Once more, everything I talked about, link below so you could check it out for yourself over here next to my head somewhere. Another video you can check on. I will see you guys in the next one.
