Youth Lagoon announces new album, shares first official single "Speed Freak"

Singer/songwriter Trevor Powers resurrected his Youth Lagoon moniker a few years ago with 2021's Heaven is a Junkyard, which was his first YL album in about eight years. Now, he's ready to follow that up with another.

Rarely Do I Dream, the fifth Youth Lagoon album, will be out February 21 via Fat Cat. The new record includes all three of his recent, previously-shared standalone singles: "My Beautiful Girl", "Football", and "Lucy Takes a Picture".

The lead single, "Speed Freak", comes accompanied by a video directed by longtime collabator Tyler T. Williams. Watch and listen below:

Much of the thrust behind the new album came from Powers rediscovering a bunch of home videos from his parents' basement. He says in a press release:

"When I took the tapes home and popped in the first one, it was my brother Bobby and I at the state fair. I was 4 years old choking on a corn dog. If anything’s a summary of life, that is. What I was really consumed with was how much I could zoom in on my actual history. I wanted to really make someone feel like they were inside my living room in 1993, but rearrange the furniture a bit. Something about combining that level of hyperreality with fairytales of devils and detectives weirdly felt like the truest way to immortalize these pieces of my family."

According to the backstory of the record:

"Powers spent the following week recording his favorite moments off the TV — Easter egg hunts, backyard baseball, bloody noses, birthday parties, road trips, and all the life in-between. The vivid intimacies of life and boyhood depicted in Powers’ home movies began shaping and infusing with his songs. He started sampling the audio and manipulating it into a kind of musical cinematography, fusing past with future."

The album, co-produced with mixer/engineer Rodaidh McDonald, represents a continuation of the "rural noir" style of songwriting that Powers reentered the fray with on Heaven. "I had ended Youth Lagoon years ago because I lost who I was,” he says. “Then life jumped me in an alley and gave me a beating. That suffering changed my frequency. Now my ideas are a river. I can’t keep up."
