The woman who previously accused Jay-Z of sexually assaulting her as a teenager now says she identified the wrong person and has never met him.

In a 12-page declaration filed Thursday, September 24, the anonymous woman withdrew her allegations against Jay-Z, whose legal name is Shawn Carter, according to Rolling Stone. She said Carter never raped or otherwise sexually assaulted her and apologized for accusing him.

“There is no truth to any of my claims against Mr. Carter,” she wrote, adding that she understands her accusations caused damage that “can never be fully undone.”

Her current attorney, James Blair Newman Jr., said the woman has survived sexual assault but was “entirely mistaken” when she named Carter as an assailant.

The declaration also provides a new account of how Carter became connected to the case. The woman said she responded to a 2024 Facebook advertisement seeking people with sexual-assault allegations against Sean Combs. She claims she later began questioning whether Carter had been involved and even whether she had attended the celebrity party at the center of her account. Her former attorney Tony Buzbee disputes portions of that version, telling Rolling Stone that several lawyers heard the same allegations from her before he became involved.

The original lawsuit first named Combs in October 2024 and referred to another unnamed celebrity. Carter was added as a defendant that December, accused alongside Combs of assaulting the woman following the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards. Both men denied her allegations.

She voluntarily dismissed that case with prejudice in February 2025.

Carter then pursued his own litigation over how the accusations were handled. His remaining federal case accuses Buzbee and his firm of "malicious prosecution." Carter has now dismissed the woman herself from that lawsuit following her new declaration.

Buzbee maintains that his firm believed her account when it represented her. Earlier this month, a California appeals court separately upheld the dismissal of Carter’s extortion and defamation case against Buzbee, finding no evidence that the attorney advanced the allegations knowing they were false or with reckless disregard for their truth.
