Guitarist and composer William Tyler has announced a new album, Time Indefinite, which arrives April 25th via Psychic Hotline.
To mark this announcement, Tyler has released a short film Time Indefinite, Part One, split into three different tracks: “Cabin Six”, “Concern”, and “Star of Hope”. The film is compiled entirely from Tyler’s old family home movies.
Watch it below:
The release of standalone track "Flight Final" last year revealed Tyler had been experimenting on an old tape machine he found while cleaning out his grandfather's office during a family trip in Jackson, Mississippi. Turns out he squeezed more ideas out of it, forming the fundamental groundwork for Time Indefinite.
"Cabin Six" echoes the ominous and chilling rumble of a ghost train, whereas on "Concern", Tyler's guitar melody sounds like hymnal chimes, slowly eroded by decayed background melodies. And finally "Star Of Hope", where he plays along the melody of a paean once heard on AM Radio, salving some of its former grace.
“I’m always fascinated by the often random origin stories of ‘sacred melodies’- ie the melody of the star spangled banner being an old English drinking song," Tyler says.
According to the press release, Time Indefinite is largely inspired by the films of Ross McElwee: a cross-country reckoning with addiction, middle age, loneliness, neurosis, and embedding a personal soul search within the greater landscapes.
Time Indefinite is Williams Tyler's first full-length in six years. Tyler has previously released critically-acclaimed albums like Modern Country and Goes West, and also scored Kelly Reichardt's 2019 motion picture First Cow. In the summer of 2023, Tyler revealed an eye-opening collaboration with Kieran Hebden – aka Four Tet – resulting in the tracks "Darkness Darkness / No Services".
