TV on the Radio's Tunde Adebimpe announces debut solo album 'Thee Black Boltz'

Tunde Adebimpe, the co-frontman of indie rockers TV On the Radio, has officially announced his debut solo LP. After putting out his first solo single last year, Adebimpe has shared details a full-length record called Thee Black Boltz, out April 18 via Sub Pop.

Additionally, Adebimpe has shared first official single "Drop". Listen below:

Produced by Adebimpe & Wilder Zoby, with additional production and contributions from his TVotR bandmates Jaleel Bunton & Jahphet Landis, Thee Black Boltz promises to tackle the human condition ("in all its forms") in a post-pandemic world. And while he didn't necessarily alter his songwriting style from his main band, he does admit he had to do a bit more work because he didn't have that system of scaffolding to fall back on. He goes onto say:

"I’ve been doing this thing with this group of people for so long, that I can just have a vague sketch of a concept and I know Jaleel or Kyp will have five brilliant ideas on where it can go ... But for Thee Black Boltz, I didn’t have that scaffolding to hang on. That was both terrifying and exhilarating."

Adebimpe says he was looking for moments of joy in an increasingly chaotic world. He describes Thee Black Boltz as such:

"It was my way of building a rock or a platform for myself in the middle of this fucking ocean ... The sparks of inspiration/motivation / hope that flash up in the midst of (and sometimes as a result of) deep grief, depression or despair. Sort of like electrons building up in storm clouds clashing until they fire off lightning and illuminate a way out, if only for a second. Also it’s a good name for a cool metal band, and I think that most people would describe me as akin to a very cool metal band."

Adebimpe and his TVotR crew recently reissued their debut LP and went on a short tour – their first shows in five years. And while they haven't had an album since 2014's Seeds, they do have a few more shows on slate this year, including Kilby Block Party and some festival dates in Europe and have promised more to come.
