James Hetfield claims that Metallica offered Turnstile a tour spot; however, the Baltimore hardcore band turned it down.
On the frontman's SiriusXM show, Riff Life, he goes on to say, "We have seen them live. We wanted to get them on tour. They said no; they're doing good on their own already." Hetfield did not appear spiteful about the rejection, giving the genre-defining group their flowers: "Man, what a vibe they bring. Go see them live if you can." He goes on, "When you see them live, you totally get it."
Oddly, he also felt the need to single out Turnstile guitarist Meg Mills: "They’ve got a gal in the band now, which is fun." Listen to the full clip below:
Evidently, the two bands are on opposite sides of the spectrum when it comes to their live performances.
In recent weeks, Metallica was under fire for denouncing political advocacy from musicians. On stage at Las Vegas' Sphere on October 10th, Hetfield claimed, "Metallica is not here like some other entertainers to influence you with their bullshit." This sparked much backlash from fans and non-fans alike, as much of Metallica's catalog is inherently political.
Turnstile, conversely, recently performed at the Washington Monument of all venues, in benefit of Palestine, Sudan, and Lebanon. 60,000 fans showed up at the National Mall in Washington, DC, where the group raised over $200,000 for Human Concern International.
While there doesn't appear to be bad blood between the groups, there is certainly a generational divide when it comes to political awareness and advocacy.
