Tobias Jesso Jr. announces 's h i n e', first album in ten years

Today, the Grammy Award-winning songwriter Tobias Jesso Jr. announced that his sophomore album, s h i n e, is coming next Friday, November 21, via R&R. Though he's been active in pop songwriting, the artist has not released an album since his 2015 debut, Goon. He has also remained relatively behind the scenes, also stepping away from touring and live performances to focus on writing for others.

Now, he unveils eight new tracks, including "I Love You", the first promotional single, which comes with an accompanying music video, directed by Christopher Ripley and starring actors Dakota Johnson and Riley Keough. The video captures their live reactions as Jesso Jr. and his band perform the song live in his studio. Watch/listen below:

s h i n e focuses on Jesso Jr.'s personal relationships, providing reflections on parenthood, friendship, breakups, and more. He wrote and produced all eight tracks, with Shawn Everett as the mixer. He also credits Danielle Haim, Justin Vernon (Bon Iver), Eli Teplin, Julian Bunetta, Rosie Hamilton, and Tommy King as artists who helped on the record, per a press release.

Jesso Jr. wrote the album in a six-week period earlier this year, though he says that this will be the culmination of his 10-year hiatus.

As a pop songwriter, Tobias Jesso Jr. won the 2023 Grammy for Songwriter of the Year, as well as Album of the Year, for his involvement in Harry Styles' Harry's House. This season, he's up for Songwriter of the Year again, mainly for his work on Miley Cyrus' Beautiful Things and Justin Bieber's SWAG. (He also collaborated with Dijon, Olivia Dean, Bon Iver, and HAIM, all of whom also received Grammy nominations.) He is also nominated for Album of the Year for SWAG.
