The Replacements are getting biopic treatment, helmed by Finn Wolfhard

Minnesota alt rock legends The Replacements will be the subject of a new feature-length biopic, led by musician and actor Finn Wolfhard.

The forthcoming movie, which will chronicle the band's unexpected rise from the underground art rock scene to major label success before crashing out in the early 90s, will be adapted from Bob Mehr's 2016 biography, Trouble Boys: The True Story of the Replacements.

Mehr's biography, based off decades of original reporting and research, emphasizes the self-destructiveness at the heart of one of the US' most influential rock bands, focusing, in particular, on the caustic dynamic between guitarist and vocalist Paul Westerberg and bass player Tommy Stinson. From their beginnings in the underground punk scene, to the rise in popularity due to their notoriously raucous and drunken live shows (especially in Reagan's America), to the dissolutions, to the shaky Westerberg-led reunions, Trouble Boys gets in the weeds of The Replacements' complex history. Now — or rather, at some point in the future — we'll get to see some of those scenes reenacted on the screen.

The singer-songwriter confirmed earlier today that he has been co-writing script with his father. Filmmaker Rich Peete will be producing the movie under his company, Neighborhood Watch, Variety reports.

Commenting on the official announcement on social media, Wolfhard quipped, "One of my parents’ first dates was to a Replacements concert. Then I was born!"

The actor and singer-songwriter continues to balance both his careers, as he's currently on tour supporting his most recent record Happy Birthday (released as the debut of his solo project in June via AWAL). And while he's been behind the camera for films before — as Hell of a Summer, a zany horror film he co-directed, co-produced, and co-starred in, came out recently as well — now he's combining both art projects for a musical biopic.

More details will be revealed as the project develops.
