"That hurt, it hurt a lot" - Lil Wayne responds to not being chosen to headline Super Bowl Halftime Show

Much has happened since Kendrick Lamar was chosen to headline the Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show. The Californian rapper announced the news with a video referencing his feud with Drake, and a few days later dropped a brand-new track on his Instagram account.

A huge backlash - as seen in Nicky Minaj and Birdman's posts on X, among others - had been ignited due to Jay Z (Producer of Super Bowl Halftime Show since 2019) picking Lamar as the headliner instead of Lil Wayne. The rapper was expected to be chosen for the role as next year's Super Bowl is held in Wayne's hometown of New Orleans.

After all the controversy, Wayne has finally responded publicly: "First of all, forgive me for the delay [...], I had to get enough strength to do this without breaking," he begins, in a livestream that he later shared on his Instagram account as a video. He thanks "every voice, every opinion, all the care, and the support out there, your words turn into arms, and held me up when I try to fall back."

After a brief pause, the five-time GRAMMY winner continues, expressing:

"That hurt, it hurt a lot [...] I blame myself for not being mentally prepared for a letdown, and just automatically put myself into that position like somebody told me that was my position. So, I blame myself for that, but I thought there was nothing better [at] that spot, that stage, and that platform [...] It made me feel like shit not getting this opportunity, and when I felt like shit, you guys reminded me that I ain't shit without y'all, and that's an amazing reality. It broke me, and I'm just trying to put myself back together. I felt like I let all of y'all down for not getting that opportunity, but, I'm working on me, and I'm working"

Throughout the video, a poster that reads "MAKING OF CARTER 6" can be seen on the back. The new entry in the rapper's series is nearing its final touches as announced by Wayne.

Wayne showed his desire to headline the Super Bowl on the 4HUNNID Podcast, specially for this upcoming one, as it takes place in New Orleans.
