Suede announce 30th anniversary reissue of 'Coming Up'

Suede announced earlier today that they'd be reissuing their third studio album Coming Up for its 30th anniversary. In a special package that includes rare recordings, original B-sides, and new mixes, the deluxe edition of the Mercury Prize-nominated album will be out September 25 via Demon Music.

The band also shared a live version of "Beautiful Ones" originally performed for BBC One Radio in August 1996, as well as the remastered music video. Watch/listen to the track below:

Originally released on September 2, 1996 on Nude Records, Coming Up represented a shift in Suede's musical identity, not just as a band pushing itself to the outskirts of the greater Britpop movement (think Pulp, Oasis, Blur, etc., whose 1994 and 1995 records dominated charts and the country's mass cultural scene), but as a group facing dwindling popularity and internal struggles. Dog Man Star — the band's second, more alt/glam rock-leaning record released in 1994— did not match the same critical and financial success as 1993's Suede (which scored the band's first Mercury Prize nomination), and original guitarist Bernard Butler parted ways with the group.

Coming Up introduced Richard Oakes to the Suede lineup, and front man Brett Anderson decided to kick his sonic direction into full pop. After its initial release, the record immediately hit No. 1 on the UK Billboard charts and scored the band's second Mercury Prize nomination, losing to New Forms by drum and bass group Roni Size & Reprazent. It also produced hit singles "Trash," "Saturday Night," and "Beautiful Ones."

"You’re at your most creative in a band if you’ve got something to kick against," said Richard Oakes in a press release, "and Coming Up was us doing that. It was like, ‘No, we’re not done. Just you watch’."

The 30th Anniversary reissue of Coming Up will be released on half-speed mastered black vinyl, a pink and blue blended colored vinyl, a 5-CD deluxe box set, and digitally. The 5-CD box set includes the remastered original album, 2026 Steven Wilson stereo mixes, all the B-sides from the original single formats, and bonus tracks, including "Shipbuilding" and a live BBC version of "Coming Up."

The new album art features the original cover fully restored by the original design team in collaboration with Peter Saville and photographer Nick Knight. The anniversary package also includes new sleeve notes by music journalist and biographer Miranda Sawyer.
