Spotify and Universal Music Group (UMG) are continuing their headfirst dive into AI and have now officially entered into a licensing partnership that will allow premium Spotify users to “create” AI-generated remixes of select UMG artists’ songs.
UMG CEO Lucian Grainge described the initiative as a way to “support human artistry, deepen fan relationships, and create additional revenue opportunities for artists and songwriters.”
Artists will have the option to either participate or opt out of this new feature, and those who do join the program will receive royalties from the AI-generated tracks built from their music.
Alex Norström, Co-CEO of Spotify, said in an announcement introducing the add-on that:
"Solving hard problems for music is what Spotify does, and fan-made covers and remixes are next. What we’re building is grounded in consent, credit, and compensation for the artists and songwriters that take part. Through each technological transformation, we have worked together with Sir Lucian and his team to evolve the music ecosystem into a richer, more beneficial experience for fans and a more rewarding outcome for artists and songwriters."
Spotify has been teasing this update since last October, and while there’s still no official release date, its rollout now appears to be sooner rather than later.
