Sky Ferreira set to release new single "Leash" for 'Babygirl' soundtrack

Earlier today, the independent movie production company A24 revealed in a snippet that Sky Ferreira wrote and recorded "Leash," an original track for the upcoming movie Babygirl, in theaters on 25 December.

The new single will be released this Thursday on all streaming platforms, according to A24's official social media.

Ferreira was contacted this summer to write a song for Halina Reijn's upcoming film, according to a profile with Vogue. "The film had only wrapped a few months prior, so they showed me a very early cut," said Ferreira.

"I’ve always wanted to make music for films, so I really went for it even though I wasn’t expecting to get the job."

Co-produced by frequent collaborator Jorge Elbrecht ("Don't Forget," "Downhill Lullaby"), the new pop track appears to have a grittier, cinematic quality, laden with 80's-sounding synthesizers and messy, heavy guitars. This single also marks Ferreira's first foray into complete artistic independence, as she was quietly dropped from Capitol Records in late 2023 and is still working on getting the rights to some of her music written and recorded under her contract.

Though she hasn't released any new music since the release of "Don't Forget" on 25 May 2022, Sky Ferreira has slowly been coming back to the music world this year. In April, the indie pop singer embarked on a small UK/Paris tour, performing in seven cities in England, Scotland, and Paris. She also made a surprise guest appearance at the 2024 Coachella Festival, singing a cover of Lady A's "Need You Now" as the unannounced opener for Kevin Abstract's set.

Ferreira also has a "Leash" music video and new music planned for release in early 2025, according to Vogue. "I am following up 'Leash' with another song right afterwards—some time early next year—because I don’t want it to seem like some random one-off," she told them.

Her highly-anticipated sophomore album Masochism—which was originally set for 2015, then delayed multiple times due to creative conflicts with Capitol Records—has not been forgotten, as she's still intent on releasing it after she gets the rights to her songs back.
