Rush kick off Fifty Something tour with emotional Los Angeles reunion

The moment the lights went down, it was clear Rush hadn't returned to the stage just to trade on nostalgia.

Before a note was played, the band rolled out a hilarious pre-show film centered around a haunted retirement home, packed with inside jokes for longtime fans. Geddy Lee popped up disguised as a sausage vendor, Alex Lifeson appeared as a military guard handing out doughnuts, and the pair even found themselves sporting some familiar white robes. There were cameos from Paul Rudd and Jason Segel, a callback to I Love You, Man, plus a couple of animated joint-smoking birds that bore an uncanny resemblance to Lee and Lifeson.

Then the screen lifted.

As Lee and Lifeson emerged through a blanket of fog and the opening notes of "Xanadu" rang out across the Kia Forum, the reaction was immediate. Rush have never opened before a show with the 1977 epic.

On June 7, the first of four sold-out nights at the Forum, Rush pulled off something that once seemed impossible. Six years after the death of Neil Peart and more than a decade since their last tour, the band is back, and it's clear that it's not a cash grab, it's for real.

"You are so beautiful," Lee told the audience early in the set, visibly taking in the reception.

Over the course of nearly three hours, including an intermission, Lee and Lifeson dug deep into the catalog. Radio staples like "Limelight" and "The Spirit of Radio" sat comfortably alongside fan favorites and deeper cuts including "Red Sector A" and "By-Tor and the Snow Dog". Aimee Mann also joined the band for "Time Stand Still", reprising her role from the studio version and drawing one of the night's loudest ovations.

At 72, Lee remains an endlessly fascinating frontman. His bass playing is as agile as ever, and he moved between instruments throughout the night, balancing bass duties with keyboards and synthesizers. Vocally, the results were mixed. Some songs, like "Freewill", showcased flashes of the power that made his voice so distinctive. Others revealed the realities of time.

Lifeson, meanwhile, sounded remarkably sharp. Whether delivering the intricate riffs of "Freewill" or the shimmering textures of "The Spirit of Radio", his playing retained the creativity and precision that helped define Rush's sound.

Still, the biggest revelation of the night was drummer Anika Nilles.

Replacing Neil Peart is one of the most daunting jobs in rock music. Nilles never tried to imitate him, but she clearly understands what made his playing special. From the opening song onward, she attacked the material with confidence, power, and astonishing technical control.

Rush's catalog is filled with famously difficult arrangements, odd time signatures, and drum parts that generations of musicians have spent years trying to decode. Nilles handled it all with ease. Every fill landed. Every shift felt natural. She brought her own energy to the songs while honoring the spirit of the originals.

Peart's presence was felt throughout the evening. Archival footage appeared during "Bravado" and again following "Natural Science", serving as a reminder that while the band has entered a new chapter, its foundation remains intact.

The chemistry between Nilles, Lee, and Lifeson was especially evident during the "2112" suite that opened the second half of the show. It was a staggering display of musicianship, the kind of performance that demands respect whether you're a lifelong Rush fan or not.

For a band whose tour begins with a retirement-home joke, Rush looked anything but ready for retirement.

And with Nilles behind the kit, they sound like they still have plenty left to say.

The Rush Fifty Something North American tour continues through December, with international dates to follow, with the band playing multiple nights and multiple set lists in each city.
