Robyn returns with brand new single, "Dopamine"

Robyn made a brief return to music last year with her feature on Charli xcx's "360" remix, but today, the Swedish pop legend marks her official return to the studio with the single "Dopamine", her first piece of new music in seven years.

The new single comes with a music video, directed by Marlii Andre. Watch/listen to "Dopamine" below:

The single also marks Robyn's debut under the label Young. Here, she teams up with longtime collaborator Klas Åhlund to write a song about the rush of euphoria one feels when they fall in love. "Everyone has a phone where they see their heart rate, and we’re learning how to decode our emotions through the hormones and chemical substances in our bodies,” comments the pop star.

Robyn adds:

“It’s almost like we don’t even accept that we’re human anymore, like we’re trying to shoot ourselves out of it and explain every single thing — which I think is great, but that’s also why the world is shit, this idea that you can figure out and win life or something. The doubleness of 'Dopamine' is having an emotion that is super real, super strong, intense, enjoyable or painful, and at the same time knowing that this is just a biological process in my body — and then not to choose religion or science. To just accept that they’re there together and to be able to go in between.”

Robyn first announced she would be releasing new music on November 9, teasing fans on Instagram to subscribe to her mailing list for announcement. The next day, November 10, Robyn posted the cover art for the single — a close-up of her eye — to social media, officially announcing today's release of "Dopamine".

Robyn's last album was 2018's Honey, her eighth studio album.

The "Dancing On My Own" pop star has not confirmed if "Dopamine" will be part of an eventual album. Her longtime collaborator and songwriter and producer Åhlund, however, recently admitted on a podcast that he "just finished a new Robyn album that's coming out," as translated and reported on Stereogum. He added, "Super exciting! Very proud of it." His comments were originally in Swedish, as he appeared on Nordmark Pod.

Stay tuned for more updates.
