Phoebe Bridgers lands her first no. 1 on Adult Alternative Airplay with “Lost Boys”

Phoebe Bridgers is back, and the radio is here for it. “Lost Boys,” which was the first peek from her long-awaited third solo album, Lost Weekend, has climbed up to No. 1 on Billboard’s Adult Alternative Airplay chart, which is the first time Bridgers has topped the format with her solo work.

It’s a considerable milestone for an artist who, until now, had only skimmed the numbers of the format’s upper reaches. “Kyoyo” peaked at No. 25 back in 2020, and her infamous collaboration with MUNA, “Silk Chiffon,” made it up to No. 35. She’s had more luck with boygenius, where “Not Strong Enough” spent seven weeks at No. 1 in 2023 and was later crowned Billboard’s top song of that year in the format, while boygenius’ “True Blue” reached No. 34.

But “Lost Boys” is the first time Bridgers has taken a solo song from her discography to the top of the charts.

The song itself is a rare swerve from the hushed, close-mic’d melancholy that defined Punisher. Co-produced by Bridgers alongside Jack Antonoff, as well as longtime collaborators Tony Berg and Ethan Gruska, as well as Alex G., “Lost Boys” opens with a vocoder-warped intro before breaking into a bright, horn-flecked chorus that recalls listeners to the similar lift provided by the horns of “Kyoto.”

The track’s video, directed by Lance Oppenheim and Pablo Rochat, drops Bridgers into a vividly surreal Renaissance faire, complete with knights on motorcycles and actor Skyler Gisondo as a gas-station cashier turned knight in shining armor. It’s a fitting visual for a song that sees arrested development through a light hearted lens while describing a genuine wound.

After years spent largely out of the spotlight following boygenius’ Grammy sweep, Bridgers returning with a chart-topping single suggests the “lost” era did not cost her much of anything. If “Lost Boys” is any indication, Lost Weekend is shaping up to be one of the year’s bigger indie rock returns.
