Coming off touring last year’s LP The Yips, Petey USA returns with the new single “Kiss The City,” a track that feels like a deliberate step back toward the bedroom indie-pop sound that first put him on the internet map.
While The Yips leaned heavily into the chemistry of Petey’s live band and the influence of producer Chris Walla of Death Cab for Cutie, “Kiss The City” strips things back a bit. Self-produced by Petey, the track taps back into the scrappy, intimate energy of his earlier work.
Lyrically, the song wrestles with the romantic idea of ditching the city for country living, homesteading and all that, only to end up isolated, lonely, and craving community again. It’s basically a musical “fuck around and find out” about the realities of running away from modern life.
