Perfume Genius returns with new album 'Glory', shares first taste

Singer-songwriter Mike Hadreas has announced Glory, his newest album under his Perfume Genius moniker. Due out March 28 via Matador Records, the album was produced with longtime collaborator Blake Mills.

Along with the news comes the Cody Critcheloe-directed video for first single "It's a Mirror". Watch/listen below:

Hadreas and Critcheloe first collaborated on the video for "Queen", the big single from Perfume Genius's third album Too Bright, ten years ago.

On the new single, Hadreas says:

"I wake up overwhelmed even when nothing is going on. I spend the rest of the day trying to regulate, which I prefer to do at home alone with my thoughts. But why? They are mostly bad. They also haven't really changed for decades. I wrote 'It's a Mirror' while stuck in one of these isolating loops, seeing that something different and maybe even beautiful is out there but not quite knowing how to venture out. I have a lot more practice keeping the door closed."

Along with Mills, Hadreas worked on Glory with some of his closest collaborators. His longtime partner, cowriter, and keyboardist Alan Wyffels returns, as do guitarists Meg Duffy (Hand Habits) and Greg Uhlmann on guitars, drummers Tim Carr and Jim Keltner, and bassist Pat Kelly. Furthermore, it features a special guest appearance from Aldous Harding.

The album is said to tackle many familiar subjects as Hadreas's past work, but with more "wiry and driving" presentation, as Hadreas built this album more out of collaboration than ever before. It even features the return past Perfume Genius character Jason (from Set My Heart on Fire Immediately and Ugly Season).

Hadreas says this album is his "most directly confessional," and one on which he, according to a press release for the record, "rebukes gay culture’s tendency to view aging as a tragedy, peering past youth’s debaucherous prerogatives to reveal the possibilities of its aftermath."
