The Bear actor and celebrity chef Matty Matheson debuted his new hardcore band Pig Pen over the weekend at Sneaky Dee's in Toronto, playing an electric set for a couple hundred people, including plenty of photographers.
“We’re Pig Pen. We’ve never played before. You’ve never even heard us,” Matty said before kicking things off. “So what the fuck is up, Toronto? You wanna get nuts? Let’s fucking get nuts!”
A longtime hardcore enthusiast, Matheson announced the band last month via Instagram, writing, "A FEW OLD FRIENDS GOT TOGETHER A COUPLE YEARS AGO AND WROTE AND RECORDED 10 SONGS OVER 2 DAYS. WE JUST WANTED TO HANGOUT AND SEE WHAT'S UP. THIS IS OUR BAND. WE ARE PIGPEN."
The band features mainstays from the Canadian hardcore scene, including Alexisonfire's Wade McNeil, Attack In Black's Daniel and Ian Romano, and Tommy Major (Young Guv's live band, etc.).
As reported last month, this is not Matheson's first dalliance with hardcore. While working as an executive chef in the mid-2010s, he fronted the crass Toronto bruisers Sex Tears.
