Today, the London trio mary in the junkyard have shared their latest single, "New Muscles." The track is off their upcoming debut album
Role Model Hermit, out July 3 via AMF Records. As well as an accompanying music video, the band have unveiled dates for a North American tour, beginning this fall.
"New Muscles" comes with a music video directed by Luke Grieve and featuring the band members' friends and artistic collaborators as the vegetable-playing orchestra. Watch/listen to the new single below:
Following their previous singles "Crash Landing" and "Candelabra," mary in the junkyard now offer a more percussion-leading track, marching to the idiosyncratic beat of member David Addison's drum. The new song takes a more lighthearted lyrical approach, although, its fixation on bodily transformation and growth still unite it with the other two Role Model Hermit offerings. "'New Muscles' was originally composed on the accordion," says the band, who switched out the unconventional instrument with a humming bass, post-punk strings, and vocal harmonies. "We wrote it about David joining a gym."
Adding to the humor laden in their new single, the band reflect on the accompanying music video, saying via press release: "The fight in the video is real and we trained for it for a combined year (Saya [Barbaglia] 1 year, Clari [Freeman-Taylor] 1 month)."
After Role Model Hermit's release on July 3, mary in the junkyard will be traveling to select cities across the UK, Europe, and North America this summer to promote their debut, including several in-store performances at independent record shops across the UK. Next week, they'll be co-headlining a brief Los Angeles/New York City run with Irish singer-songwriter Dove Ellis. Tickets are available now.
