Earlier today, Maia Friedman, member of Dirty Projectors, released her latest single off her upcoming record Goodbye Long Winter Shadow, out May 9 via Last Gang Records. "Russian Blue" follows the release of "New Flowers" and "On Passing."
Watch the video for "Russian Blue" below:
The new song is dedicated to Friedman's childhood pet, a Russian blue cat. "Imagine being 13 in 1999," she said via press release, "there was a massive wave of movies and media that preached the ‘one true love,’ ‘will you find your soulmate’ concept." Consumed by media depictions of romance, she believed she could never find a soulmate, for her connection with her cat was enough. "It was completely naive, but what a vulnerable time, those early teenage years.”
She continued, "Cats have, at times, shown me how to live." With just a few lyrics, she expresses her relationship with her cat by singing,
"If I saw you in my sleep, would you come to me / Apple of my eye / I would sense you there, but you wouldn’t care / You have other things on your mind."
The new single also features a clarinet solo by Daniel Pencer. He is featured in the "Russian Blue" music video, as he plays against a snowy Central Park backdrop.
