After months of teasing with new singles and music videos, Lord Huron, the indie folk band founded and fronted by Ben Schneider, officially announced their new record today. Titled The Cosmic Selector, Vol. I, the band's fifth studio record will be released on July 18 via Mercury Records.
To accompany the album announcement, Schneider shared "Looking Back", the first song off the new record. Listen to the new track below:
On "Looking Back," Schneider reflects on revisiting the past, wondering if it's human nature to dwell on our memories. "The weight of your past can distort your present and future, the way massive celestial objects warp the fabric of the universe," he says. "Like a bowling ball on a trampoline."
The Cosmic Selector, Vol. I imagines life as a jukebox with infinite selections to choose, according to a press release. Written and co-produced by Schneider, Lord Huron's next project asks, "What if you could choose your fate like choosing a song on a jukebox? What if your finger slipped and you got the B-side instead? What if you misunderstood the meaning of the dang song to begin with?” Complementing the themes of the record, the imaginary jukebox is also featured as the cover art.
Lord Huron first began hinting at a new album in January with the release of "Who Laughs Last," featuring actress and director Kristen Stewart on vocals. The first single was then followed by "Nothing I Need" in March. The new music marked the band's return since the 2021 release of Long Lost. In addition to Stewart's feature on that aforementioned track, the album also featured Blonde Redhead's Kazu Makino on "Fire Eternal".
