Lionsgate will have worldwide theatrical distribution of Hurry Up Tomorrow, The Weeknd's (real name Abel Tesfaye) film-starring debut alongside Jenna Ortega (Wednesday, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice) and Barry Keoghan (The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Saltburn). Based on an original idea by Tesfaye, the film has been known to be in production since last year.
While this is Tesfaye's feature film debut, he previously starred in his own series The Idol, cancelled by Max after 1 season.
The picture is written and directed by Trey Edward Shults and, although the plot has not been revealed, it's described as a psychological thriller. The title of the feature is the same as the acclaimed singer's upcoming album, and will signify a new direction in his musical universe.
In a statement from Deadline, Adam Fogelson, chair of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group shares his excitement on the upcoming project:
“Abel is a visionary whose art cannot be confined by any single medium,” Fogelson said. “With Hurry Up Tomorrow, in partnership with Trey, his musical universe expands onto the big screen with a psychological thriller that will usher in a new cinematic experience for fans. We are thrilled to be bringing it to audiences worldwide.”
The 3-time GRAMMY winner's forthcoming album, Hurry Up Tomorrow, has no release date yet. In the meantime, you can listen to any of the previous singles "Dancing In The Flame", "Timeless" featuring Playboi Carti, and the most recent "São Paulo" with Anitta.
