Kneecap are back with another single off FENIAN, their upcoming record out April 24 via Heavenly Recordings. The Belfast rap trio recently dropped "Smugglers & Scholars", following an exclusive premiere on Zane Lowe's show on Apple Music.
Listen to "Smugglers & Scholars" below:
The new single is classic Kneecap, juxtaposing the rapid-fire rapping of members Mo Chara — who takes center-stage on the verses as he addresses the UK government's efforts to censor the group in 2025 — and Móglaí Bap over the grainy, pulsing beats of DJ Próvaí.
Speaking about "Smugglers & Scholars", Kneecap say that it's a track that's "reminiscing on Revolutionary times in Ireland, driven by a hopefulness, when the working class, academics and good people everywhere united and took action in search of a better future." Playing on the historical trope of calling Ireland the 'Land of Saints and Scholars', a romanticized view of its intellectual and religious history, the group redefine their homeland as a hotbed for revolution — a place where people can come together to effect change.
"Smugglers & Scholars" is the second single off FENIAN. It follows "Liars Tale", which came out last month.
