On January 28, Irish-language hip-hop/rap group Kneecap announced that they would be heading to North America later this year, headlining in fifteen cities across the US and Canada. The tour will be promoting the release of their 2024 debut album Fine Art, and it will be their largest one in the US yet, according to Rolling Stone.
The presale for the tour began this morning at 10 am local time, with venues nearly selling out within the hour, according to the band's social media.
Kneecap will also make their Coachella debut this coming April, traveling to the US for the festival and then spending a week performing at the Summit Music Hall in Denver and The Depot in Salt Lake City.
The Irish band exploded in international popularity this year due to the release of their first feature film and semi-fictionalized biopic, KNEECAP. The film, written and directed by Rich Peppiatt, depicts the origin and rise to fame of the Belfast band, as well as the growing revival of interest in protecting the native Irish language in spite of British censorship. The band members star as dramatized versions of themselves, and Fine Arts track "Sick in the Head" was originally written for the official soundtrack. Other songs from the band's discography are also featured and performed in the film.
KNEECAP went on to receive several awards and prestigious nominations, making history as the first Irish language film to do so, including seven British Independent Film Awards, seventeen Irish Academy Awards nominations, six BAFTA nominations, and the NEXT Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival. They were also shortlisted for Best International Feature Film and Best Original Song for the Academy Awards, but they did not end up receiving nominations.
