Kids call 50 Cent, Lil Wayne, Rihanna “oldies” on new Abbott Elementary episode

In a new episode of Emmy Award-winning series Abbott Elementary, a well-meaning substitute teacher, Mr. Eddie, who is played by Tyler James Williams, steps in to cover for an absent music instructor, and the kids basically inform him that some of his favorite tracks are now deemed "oldies."

While putting together a "Music Appreciation List" with students, Mr. Eddie strikes up a conversation about the children's favorite "oldies" tracks. A flurry of responses suggested that some of our favorite hits may have made their way into the category of "oldies" in the eyes of elementary students. The quick mention of songs from 50 Cent, Lil Wayne, and Rihanna has made it clear – we're officially oldheads now.

Songs that were mentioned by the students included 50 Cent's “In Da Club,” Rihanna's “Umbrella,” and Lil Wayne's “A Milli,” after which Mr. Eddie tries to clarify the definition of "oldies," explaining that these tracks originate from a different time. But the students aren't having any of it.

Finally, one of the students asks, "Mr. Eddie, what were iPods like," which prompts him to ditch the oldies conversation alltogether and shift gears into the old standby music class activity that everyone can relate to, "Hot Cross Buns" on the recorder.

Abbott Elementary airs Wednesdays on ABC, with episodes also available for streaming on Hulu.
