Kate Nash has announced a new album, Cailin, out January 22 via Kill Rock Stars. The record has reportedly been in the making for the past eleven years, and was produced by KoOoLkOjAk and recorded on the west coast of Ireland at Stiuideo Cuan, alongside traditional musician Charlie Lennon. 

Along with the announcement, Nash shared a new single, “Spilt Milk,” which was first premiered by Huw Stephens on BBC 6 Music. Listen here: 

Nash said the song was originally written about abortion law in Ireland prior to the repeal of the country’s Eighth Amendment in 2018, and that it has taken on a renewed relevance following the overturning of Roe v. Wade in the US. She described the song as being about “not having control over your own body, not being listened to.”

Cailin centers on Nash’s Irish identity, touching on family, forgiveness, love, colonialism, inequality, religion, and internalized shame, with references to Irish folklore and mythology throughout. Contributors on the record include Niamh Dunne, Lottie Cullen, Aimee Farrell Courtney, and Biird’s Lisa Canny playing fiddle, flute, bodhran, harp, and banjo. Nash also plays tin whistle on the album, the first instrument she ever learned. 

Nash recently played a sold-out show at Roundhouse and performed at the Fleadh and Galway International Arts Festival. She is set to perform at Other Voices Derry on September 25 and 26, with an Irish tour to follow in February.
