Japanese electronic producer Shinichi Atobe has surprise-released a new EP, Peace of Mind, via Early Reflections.
The Bandcamp-only release is Atobe’s second EP of the year following Ongaku 1, released in April on his longtime label DDS. Peace of Mind contains five tracks, with four available to stream on Bandcamp plus one download-only bonus.
Atobe debuted in 2001 with the acclaimed Ship-Scope EP on the influential dub techno label Chain Reaction. Atobe did not release any new music until his full-length debut Butterfly Effect in 2014 and has been prolific since then, transitioning from dark dub techno to a brighter house sound on more recent releases like Love of Plastic and Ongaku 1.
Though Atobe has a reputation as a recluse, he’s played live more frequently in the last few years and is performing at FFKT 2024 Izu Shirahama in Shimoda, Japan on Sept. 28. He granted his first-ever interview to Tone Glow this year and hinted at a new project, tentatively titled Discipline. Whether Peace of Mind is the same project or a precursor to a full-length album is unknown at this point.
