heavens to betsy unearth unreleased demos for new compilation

Corin Tucker of Sleater-Kinney, one of the world's most earth-shattering singers, first made waves with Tracy Sawyer of Husbands as the pioneering feminist punk duo heavens to betsy, who only released one full-length, 1994's great Calculated, and recently announced their first tour in 30 years.

But that's not all. They've unearthed an eight-track demo/"mission statement" produced by Bratmobile's Molly Neuman that's never seen the light of day. Now it's been compiled for proper release with two EPs, 1993's These Monsters Are Real and 1994's Direction, for a collection entitled baby's gone.

Among other things, it's finally a proper home for the scorched-earth rarity "My Secret."

Sawyer said in a press release:

"I wasn't sure if I would ever revisit heavens to betsy, and then when we started talking more about it, and feeling how relevant the subjects are today, almost even more so than they were back then… it just seemed like just the perfect opportunity to be doing this. Just to know each other again as adults and as mothers, it's really cool. Once we started playing again, it was like muscle memory."

On Neuman's mentorship of the band, Tucker added:

"Molly's such a leader, and she's… such an intellectual. She grasped right away that it was important for young women to have these tools to express themselves… She was so confident and so unafraid to just be like, ‘Yeah, why don't I just record that for you? I'll just check out the Tascam from the AV library at Evergreen and do it.'"

You can hear the terse, never-before-released tune "Ain't Never Goin' Back" and see the album art below.
