Harry Styles shared the music video for "American Girls", the second track off Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally, out today via Columbia Records.
Watch/listen to the new track below:
The music video was directed by James Mackel, and it features Styles going through the motion of filming an action movie, all before escaping with his stunt doubles in an explosive runaway scene. And, like "Aperture", it's all presented in a notably muted and gray color palette.
Styles defined the themes of the new albums with the lead single, "Aperture", an LCD Soundsystem-inspired dance pop track that draws from house, trance, and electroclash. The pop star then stayed pretty silent on the other tracks, focusing instead on world-building through several residencies across the world that feature household and emerging names in electronic and pop music (Robyn, James Blake, Fcukers, and more).
He also set up his One Night in Manchester special gig, attempting to harken back to the acid house raves of the 90s with an intimate, £20 performance at the Co-op Live Arena. For those who didn't snag the opportunity to actually see the pop star for a reasonable price, they'll be able to watch an edited version on Netflix. The concert film will debut March 8 at 3 pm ET.
"American Girls", however, adopts a rockier personality than the previous single and all the dance marketing, trading the shimmering synths and LCD-mimicking slow builds for a thick bass lick, The 1975-esque glittery pop production, melancholic piano, and steady and groovy percussion. Taking shots at Americanization of the pop industry, Styles filters the public yet lonely nature of his image through the women he and his circle tend to date with the simple yet repeating chorus:
"'I've known you for ages,' it's all that I've heard / My friends are in love with American girls / I've seen it in stages all over the world / My friends are in love with American girls."
"American Girls", as well as the rest of Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally, is out today via Columbia Records.
