Today, Happy Mondays announced that they will embark on a series of releases to celebrate 40 years of their band, starting with The Factory Singles, a compilation record due for release November 28. This double LP includes all the singles the band released under the Manchester-based label, Factory Records, dating this phase of their career to the band's beginnings in 1985 to 1992.
The Factory Singles features remastered Happy Mondays staples like "Step On", Hallelujah", "Freaky Dancin'", and "24-Hour Party People" — songs that exemplify the distinct Madchester sound that drew from acid house, dance, and indie rock and pop this band helped to popularize.
The double-album's cover highlights original artwork from the original artist Central Station, and physical releases will publish liner notes by the band's longtime collaborater and producer, Paul Oakenfold. (He is credited as producer on the 1990 album, Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches, as well as plenty of remixes.)
"When I think back to working with the Happy Mondays, I don’t think about chaos first," Oakenfold writes, per a press release. He adds,
"I don’t think about the drugs or the headlines. I think about the music. Because above all else — above the madness and the mayhem — was a sound that was utterly new. A sound that broke the rules. A sound that made your feet move before your brain caught up. A sound we helped shape, together."
Alongside The Factory Singles, Happy Mondays will release a digital remix album as a companion piece, with production by Oakenfold, Anna Prior, Mella Dee, Shadow Child, and Daniel Avery. Oakenfold's reimagining of "Step On" — of which he says, "It still sounds dangerous. It still sounds alive. And it still gets dancefloors moving" — will be out October 29.
Happy Mondays will celebrate the 35th anniversary of their 1990 record in 2026 with a UK tour. The Farm and Northside will join as support. Tickets are available now.
