Grimes surprise-drops new single

Today, Grimes surprise-shared "Artificial Angels", a brand new single that had been previously unannounced. A collaboration with producers VADAKIN and Grant Boutin, the electronic track continues the artist's streak of standalone singles going on since 2021.

"Artificial Angels" could be considered an amalgamation of Grimes' interests these past few years. Tapping into her interest in artificial intelligence — capped off by the inauguration of elf.tech, her generative AI software that allows people to record audio using a digital reproduction of her voice — the new track talks of a futuristic world that can't die and will maybe take over. "This is what it feels like to be hunted by something smarter than you," a robotic voice stutters at the beginning.

The cover art is equally jarring, collaging different headlines and comments calling Grimes a "fascist", press photos, crypto stock pages for AI figures and Charlie Kirk, media coverage and memes about generative AI, and photos of raw milk and the Grok anime avatar. It's a buzzword-y portrait, reflecting the past year as experienced online.

Grimes took to social media earlier this year to confirm that she was working on a new record, and that she would be sharing more art soon. As "penance" (in her words), she dropped two demos, "idgaf" and "the fool", over on her SoundCloud.

The artist did not confirm if "Artificial Angels" is part of something bigger.
