Last night, Grimes uploaded two new songs to her official SoundCloud page, telling fans they were two demos she recorded but never fully produced. She then took to social media to apologize for spending so long on her forthcoming album, hoping these unreleased singles would serve "as penance" for the wait.
The songs are available to listen for free on SoundCloud below:
"2 I don't give a fuck, I'm insane Feb.23.19 doen.m4a," was recorded in 2019, according to the artist. Judging by the date in the title, it was recorded a couple days before she announced the release of her fifth studio album Miss Anthropocene on March 19, 2019. At the time, she also promised either some standalone singles or a synth-based EP that would be separate from the darker, more industrial sound of the record, according to Pitchfork, but that never happened.
Furthermore, the demo, both lyrically and stylistically, feels like a song from that time period of her career: it features similar ethereal vocalizations to those in the intro of "So Heavy I Fell Through The Earth", a fascination with alt rock drums and guitars, and darker lyrics.
"Obviously no time was spent on it but my old manager at would always pester me to finish it and make it a banger but i forgot I suppose," Grimes wrote in a caption sharing the first single. She then continued to say, "Def has a lot of potential tho I'll probably make a better topline and produce it one day."

"I don't give a fuck, I'm insane" is also available on all streaming platforms.
The second demo "the fool nightcore2.m4a (demo idea)" is only available on SoundCloud as of right now. Taking the dreamy guitar section of Mazzy Star's "Fade Into You," Grimes created "a beautiful jam over a poem I wrote," she confessed over X (formerly Twitter). "I always loved this one I just wrote a diff song over Mazzy Star but the files are forever lost on my laptop that a child poured liquid on." The artist then said that she was "discouraged" from producing "the fool" further, and she finds it " too compressed and...nightcore."

These two demos mark the first official release from Grimes since her 2023 standalone single "I Wanna Be Software," a collaboration with electronic DJ Illangelo. There were rumors that the song was going to be a part of her upcoming record, but Grimes confirmed on X (formerly Twitter) that "I Wanna Be Software" was just a "joke song" made between friends.
Tbh it's a joke song haha- my friend came up with the title and then we were just laughing as we made it. Idk if it's that deep - more like absurdism. Sometimes I go v deep but in this case just wanting to have fun. And convey the fun of making it.

There is still no date on a new Grimes record, as she said on social media that her children, her ongoing custody battle, production collaborations on other records, becoming an independent artist again, and more have caused many delays in production.
Making a lot of art!! Just getting my nervous system to be a bit calmer after a year in court and shit. Need some recovery time. But inspired beyond belief, and have already my album with @illangelo - all the baby music, a zillion lo fi demos I might just drop, so much music wβ¦
