Greg Freeman has unveiled the second single, “Cahokia,” off his upcoming album, All Set the Bone.

As the album’s opening track and self-described thesis statement, “Cahokia” references the Middle Ages civilization that rose and flourished as quickly as it disappeared. The Cahokia Mounds, erected by multiple Indigenous groups, sit on the Illinois side of the Mississippi River. It was the most complex and influential pre-Columbian structure north of Mexico. At its peak, it spanned over 4,000 acres and served a population of 20,000.

Post-New Deal deindustrialization triggered catastrophic economic decline and gutted the once-prosperous, heavily unionized American middle class. Similarly, the Cahokia Mounds metropolis followed a similarly brutal path. Residents abandoned the site of an influential social hierarchy, whose architecture was ahead of its time, after disease spread through waste and intensive farming eroded the soil. Even the most robust, reliable systems can buckle under the weight of greed.
