Green Day and Live Nation team up to produce 'New Years Rev' film

After celebrating many milestones the past year — the 20th anniversary of American Idiot, the 30th anniversary of Dookie, the 2024 release of Saviors, and more — Green Day is getting into the filmmaking business.

Partnering with Live Nation, the rock trio officially announced earlier today that they would be producing New Years Rev, a coming-of-age comedy greatly inspired by the band's rise to fame in the 90s.

This is the first movie production credit the band will receive. They initially attempted to create a film adaptation of the Broadway stage production of American Idiot with HBO in 2020, but the project never materialized, according to Kerrang!.

New Years Rev reportedly takes inspiration from the band's scrappy, early touring days — and even tells the story of three, young men in a rock band — but the script is considered fictional. Written and directed by Lee Kirk (The Giant Mechanical Man, The Office, Ordinary World), the film will focus on a trio who mistakenly believe they were selected to open for Green Day's New Years Eve concert, embarking on a chaotic road trip to Los Angeles, The Wrap reports.

Mason Thames, Kyle Coffman, and Ryan Foust are set to star, making this all three's first principle roles in a feature-length film. The Office alumni Angela Kinsey and Jenna Fischer (also Kirk's wife) are in the cast as well, according to The Wrap.

In an official statement, Billie Joe Armstrong reflected on the early days of his career, calling the era of van tours "electric" and "unlike anything you’ve ever known." As quoted in Stereogum, he said:

"Van days rule. You will drive all night on no sleep then play a show for 10 kids in a basement of a friend of a friend’s house 50 miles east of anywhere you’ve ever heard of.  But you’ll do it again the next day, and the one after that. Because you’re doing it with your bandmates who become your family...Let the music and mischief ensue."

Ryan Croft, Head of Film & TV at Live Nation Productions (LVP), told Variety:

“With incredible guidance from Green Day, ‘New Years Rev’ tells the story of young artists chasing a dream — long nights, endless miles, and the electrifying rush of the stage fueling their journey. Brought to life by an incredible cast, it’s a tribute to the magic of live music.”

LVP is a branch of Live Nation Entertainment focused on making films with and about musicians' lives, according to their official site. In the past few years, Live Nation partnered with famous artists like Lizzo for the HBO Max documentary Love, Lizzo (2022) and Lady Gaga for the Netflix original documentary Gaga: Five Foot Two (2017). LVP has also worked with Anderson.Paak on his upcoming directoral debut, K-Pops (date: TBD), as well as actor/director Bradley Cooper for the critically acclaimed 2018 remake of A Star Is Born.

The company is also behind the executive production of the upcoming Owen Wilson/Matt Rife feature Rolling Loud, a father-son comedy set at the titular hip-hop festival, according to Deadline. Like News Years Rev, it's a fictional film allegedly based on a true story.

Armstrong, alongside his bandmates Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool, are credited as producers, with Live Nation in charge of executive production. Filming has reportedly begun in Oklahoma, according to The Wrap, yet the project is still in its early stages, so no release date has been announced.
