Grateful Dead co-founder Phil Lesh dies at 84

One of the founding members of rock icons Grateful Dead, bassist Phil Lesh, died on Friday at the age of 84.

The news broke through an Instagram post from his account, which reported that Lesh "was surrounded by his family and full of love."

There was no cause of death disclosed for Lesh, a survivor of both prostate and bladder cancer. He also underwent a liver transplant in 1998, due to years of alcohol abuse.

Lesh founded the Grateful Dead in 1965, alongside Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Bill Kreutzmann, and Ron McKernan. He seldom rejoined the band for the occasional performance after Garcia died in 1995. Instead, Lesh frequently toured with an ensemble entitled Phil Lesh & Friends, while also taking part in the band's 2009 reunion tour and 2015 shows that marked the Grateful Dead's 50th anniversary.
