Geordie Greep shares new single "Blues" ahead of debut album 'The New Sound'

Geordie Greep, frontman and lead guitarist of Black Midi – currently on an indefinite hiatus - has premiered a new track from his debut solo album The New Sound, due out on 4 October via Rough Trade Records. “Blues” kicks off the new record, a song previously performed live at The Lexington and The Windmill.

It was first introduced by Mary Anne Hobbs on BBC 6 Radio (at 11:41 in the playbar), but has now been released on all DSPs. A recording of a live performance of the song at TV Eye in Brooklyn, New York, has also been uploaded to Greep’s Youtube channel.

He’s also set to perform new songs from his upcoming album live at 7pm UK time/2pm EST on BBC 6 Radio.

This is the second single from Greep’s The New Sound, following “Holy, Holy”, which was described in a press release as an “increasingly febrile and furtive tale.” It was released alongside a music video directed by London-based filmmaker Ethan Barrett.

In a new interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Greep talks about how much he wanted to sing on his forthcoming album:

“There’s that phrase that a band’s only as good as its drummer; well, a singer’s only as good as the song. At one point, I thought, ‘Wait, if I’m singing this music, there’s no use being insecure or shy about it — go for it.’ I think there’s a tendency in experimental music to do this great instrumental, but the singing we’ll do a bit looking off to the side, like an afterthought. And it’s like, listen — in songs, singing is the main thing. Why not go for it? Really work on it and pay attention to it. Get the right takes.”
