Florence + The Machine debut the title track of 'Everybody Scream'

Just a day after Florence Welch announced the band's upcoming sixth studio album Everybody Scream (out October 31 via UMG), Florence + The Machine released the music video and single for the titular track.

The music video is directed by Autumn de Wilde (Emma.), and the song features writing credits from Mitski and IDLES' Mark Bowen, the latter of whom appears in the video. Bowen and Aaron Dessner helped Welch with production.

Watch/listen to "Everybody Scream" below:

Exploring the themes of witchcraft, folk horror, and mysticism, the music video has Welch in a blood red dress, dancing feverishly (pun intended) in front of a jury of men in Puritanical dress. Surrounded by a troupe of dancing women, they emerge from the woods to possess the men.

"Everybody Scream" also makes allusions to the sudden end of the 2022 Dance Fever tour, which was cut short due to Welch needing emergency surgery for her feet. "But look at me run myself ragged," she sings. "Blood on the stage / But how can I leave you when you're screaming my name?"

Now recovered and onto her next studio album, Welch takes most of the new track to appreciate the communal feeling of a concert. As she belts in the chorus,

"Here I take up the whole lot sky
Unfurling becoming my full size
And look at me burst through the ceiling
I'm just so glad you came
Breathless and begging and screaming my name
Screaming my name"

Though the tracklist has yet to be revealed, Welch also gave more information on the details of Everybody Screams today. The album was written over the course of two years with the help of Dessner, Bowen, Mitski, and producer James Ford. While immediately inspired by her 2022 surgery, Welch will use the new album to explore the themes of healing, the limits of the body, spirituality, and aging in a physically-demanding career.
