Father John Misty posts another cryptic teaser to Instagram

Father John Misty posted a reel to Instagram this afternoon which seemed to announce either a forthcoming single or album, with a release date of September 17.

This comes a month after Tillman announced his greatest hits album Greatish Hits: I Followed My Dreams and My Dreams Said to Crawl, which was accompanied by the single “I Guess Time Makes Fools of Us All”. In the press release for the compilation and new single Tillman revealed a sixth LP, that would feature the single, was forthcoming. Watch the video below:

The very brief teaser showcases an epic dream pop sound more akin to a song like “So I’m Growing Old on Magic Mountain” from his 2017 album Pure Comedy. It would mark a stark departure from Chloe and the Next 20th Century, which saw the Los Angeles folk singer embracing the stylings of a 50s jazz lounge singer.

The song clip is accompanied by flashes of black and white drawings depicting what appear to be religious or occult figures and symbols, similar to the three other teasers Tillman has released this summer. The style is reminiscent of the enigmatic and renowned New Yorker cartoonist Edward Steed, who also did the album art for Pure Comedy. No such announcement about his involvement in the project has been made.

Father John Misty will support Kacey Musgraves through the September and October dates of her Deeper Well Tour, which starts September 4 in Pennsylvania.
