Dry Cleaning are back with a new single promoting their upcoming record, Secret Love, out January 9 via 4AD. "Cruise Ship Designer", which comes with an accompanying music video, is out now.
The music video for the band's latest track features bassist Lewis Maynard performing a dance routine, choreographed by BULLYACHE, in front of a silver curtain. Watch/listen to "Cruise Ship Designer" below:
"The song is about a cruise ship and hotel designer who’s skilled and paid well, but who doesn’t believe his role has real worth," says vocalist and lyricist Florence Shaw. "He tries to enjoy it, and invests himself in meeting the challenges of the job." The song also picks at the feeling of alienation, contrasting the designer's careerist mentality with the grandiose status symbol of the ship and lifestyle he's building for others. ("Cruises are big business," Shaw sings. "I don’t personally like them, / but I need to serve a useful purpose.")
The band cites XTC's "Making Plans For Nigel" — a satirical 1979 song about conformity written from the perspective of two overbearing parents imagining their son's future — as one of the song's inspirations.
Dry Cleaning will begin their Secret Love promotional tour this coming January in the UK. They will then travel to cities across the US, Canada, and Europe. YHWH Nailgun will support them for all the North America dates. Tickets are available now.
